About CFL MTI Program

CFL Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) Program was established in 2014. Our MTI program focuses on the field of translation between English and Chinese, enrolling both full-time and part-time students, with duration of 2 and 3 years respectively. Our program has been designed based on the regional advantages of Yunnan province, the need of highland agricultural industry and the strengths of YAU. We are committed to preparing competent and professional translators with highly proficient translation skills and knowledge of agricultural science, to serve the needs of China's agricultural internationalization and the rise of Yunnan as a regional pivot opening toward South and Southeast Asia.

Features and Advantages

Practice-oriented teaching mode

An approach integrating translation theories and practice has been adopted in our MTI education. Following the scientific training patterns of professional masters and a student-centered philosophy, we are employing innovative teaching methods like seminar-style teaching and project-oriented teaching. On top of courses about the theories of linguistics, literature and translation, a great number of practical skill training courses are incorporated in our curriculum, highlighting the needs of the language service market. The practice teaching system is further improved and innovated to bridge the gap between MTI students and professional translators, helping them learn to serve practical purposes.

Translation plus agricultural science

Leveraging the disciplinary advantages of YAU, we offer a series of agriculture-related translation courses. Thanks to the collaborative translation programs conducted jointly by teachers in both translation and agriculture-related majors, practical examples of agricultural translation have been introduced into various courses as teaching materials or cases. In addition, agricultural experts in YAU are invited to give bilingual lectures on agricultural topics to expand students' professional knowledge in specific domains. These training measures have effectively improved the translation ability of MTI students in the agricultural field.

A comprehensive practice system

A cooperative training system is adopted in the MTI practice training process. We have launched an all-round training mode involving school education, fieldwork bases and social practice. A close cooperation takes place between tutors in YAU and fieldwork bases. The internal and external resources are integrated in building a professional practical system. Our students are engaged in language services in international events and activities such as China-South Asia Expo and Agricultural Expo regularly held in Kunming, the international training programs of the YAU Chinese-ASEAN Education and Training Center, the foreign exchange activities of the YAU International Cooperation and Exchange Office, and also some cooperative translation projects with other colleges of the university. Through practice, the translation ability of MTI student is improved substantially.

Teaching Achievements

Since the establishment of the MTI program, the tutors and teachers have constantly improved their teaching methods and actively explored the education and teaching mode suitable for the actual situation of the university and MTI training objectives. To date, they have conducted 7 provincial graduate quality projects and a dozen of research projects at all levels. They have also published 4 translated books and compiled 4 monographs and textbooks in the field of translation. These achievements ensure a better and sustainable development of our MTI program. Our students have achieved remarkable results in various translation and language skill competitions. Up to now, they have won 8 awards of national level and more than 60 provincial awards.
